The wonders of the human body ever cease, and that goes for how we swallow. A TikToker has blown people’s minds after claiming that we can only swallow two to three times consecutively before our body forces us to stop.

Sharing a short video to his channel, Jesse Beharrell demonstrates it and urges others to test the theory out.

He says: “You can only swallow two to three times before your body forces you to stop. Go on, try it, let me know how many times you can do it.”

However, despite his confidence, a number of people commented on the video to tell Jesse that they managed to do it as many as seven times before they had to stop.

One user said: “I did four and almost died.”

Another wrote: I swallowed once and after that I almost died.”

“7 and I almost saw my grandma,” commented a third.

While another added: “5 times. It felt like I almost choked with the insides of my throat.”

So what’s going on?

Well, there are two kinds of swallowing, wet and dry. Wet is when you are eating or drinking, and dry, unsurprisingly, is when you aren’t actually swallowing anything at all, other than saliva.

To swallow anything your throat muscles, 22 of them, have to contract to force the contents down – this is called the peristaltic sequence.

Studies have shown that when ‘dry swallowing’, peristalsis is less likely to occur and is also weaker than if a person was ‘wet swallowing’.

As a result, it quickly becomes increasingly difficult to swallow consecutively when there is nothing there to push down.

Another reason why it’s actually pretty difficult is that when we swallow we momentarily stop breathing.

This is great when we’re eating or drinking, as it stops us from inhaling anything we shouldn’t. However, if you’re just trying to see how many times you can swallow without stopping, then it could cause you some discomfort.

So it’s in your interest not to do it.

With that in mind, a doctor with three million TikTok followers recently explained why we get hiccups – and more importantly, how we can really get rid of them

In a video shared with , Dr Karan Rajan explained that it’s all about the diaphragm – a thin sheet of muscle that sits directly below the lungs and just above your stomach.

He said: “When it contracts it moves down, your lungs expand and you breathe in. When it relaxes, it moves up and you exhale.

“Sometimes, that goes wrong. Anything that can irritate your diaphragm from above or below causes hiccups.”
