Susanna Reid Addresses Piers Morgan's Departure From Good Morning Britain

Susanna Reid has addressed co-host Piers Morgan’s departure from after he decided to quit the show yesterday (9 March), stating ‘shows go on’.

Speaking at the beginning of this morning’s show, Reid said: “He is without doubt an outspoken, challenging, opinionated, disruptive broadcaster.

“He has many critics and he has many fans. You will know that I disagreed with him about Meghan [Markle]’s interview. He himself clarified his comments about her mental health on the show yesterday.

“There are many voices on and everyone has their say. But now Piers has decided to leave the programme. Some of you may cheer and others may boo.

“He has been my presenting partner, Monday to Wednesday, for more than five years and during Brexit and the pandemic and other issues, he has been a voice for many of you and a voice that many of you have railed against.

“It is certainly going to be very different but shows go on and so on we go.”

Susanna, 50, appeared on the show alongside colleague Ranvir Singh, in the wake of Morgan’s shock departure, following a period of controversy around his opinions.

Things came to a head on yesterday’s show when Morgan stormed off set following a run-in with his ITV colleague Alex Beresford, who pulled him up on his comments on Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s interview with Oprah.

Talking about the interview and the couple’s decision to leave the UK to start a new life in the US, Beresford said: “They have had an overwhelming amount of negative press.

“I watched the programme yesterday and yes they had some great press around the wedding, but what press is going to trash someone’s special day?

“There was bad press around the engagement, before the engagement and everything that has followed has since has been incredibly damaging, clearly, to Meghan’s mental health and also to Harry.”

Speaking to Morgan, he added: “I understand you don’t like Meghan Markle, you’ve made it so clear a number of times on this programme and I understand that you had a personal relationship with Meghan Markle and she cut you off.

“But she’s entitled to cut you off if she wants to – has she said anything about you since she cut you off? I don’t think she has, yet you continue to trash her.”

Morgan walked off the set during the live broadcast, with Beresford labelling his behaviour ‘diabolical’. ITV later released a statement saying Morgan had officially departed from the show.
